Chavismo Claims Victory in Venezuelan Parliamentary Elections with 83.42% of Votes

Chavismo Claims Victory in Venezuelan Parliamentary Elections with 83.42% of Votes

Electoral turnout reported at 43.18% amid allegations of discontent and political repression.
Venezuelan authorities have announced that the ruling party, associated with the legacy of Hugo Chávez, has secured a decisive victory in the recent parliamentary elections, achieving 83.42% of the votes.

This figure translates to a total of 5,024,475 ballots, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE), which is known for its closeness to the government.

The CNE stated that the results were derived from 99.88% of the vote counting from electronic voting machines.

Official participation in the elections was reported at 43.18%.

This follows regional and parliamentary elections held on a Sunday characterized by scrutiny regarding their transparency.

In contrast, the Democratic Alliance, which includes several intervened and minor parties, garnered 361,769 votes, equivalent to 6.01% of the total.

The Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) and members of the opposing Unified Democratic Platform (PUD) received 304,425 votes, accounting for 5.05%, while the Fuerza Vecinal party obtained 141,588 votes, or 2.35%.

Other smaller parties registered a combined total of 181,926 votes, representing 3.02% of the overall tally.

A total of 8,813 null votes were reported, amounting to 0.15%.

Carlos Quintero, the vice president of the CNE, announced that 282 of the 285 parliamentary seats had been allocated.

Of these, 253 seats went to the ruling party.

The remaining seats were distributed as follows: the Democratic Alliance secured 13, UNT won 11, Fuerza Vecinal earned 4, and the Alliance del Lápiz received 1.

Three seats, reserved for indigenous representation, are pending election and will be contested next Sunday, along with nine regional legislative councils.

Additionally, Quintero confirmed that chavismo would govern in 23 out of Venezuela's 24 states, with only the state of Cojedes being led by the opposition, where anti-Chávez governor Alberto Galíndez was re-elected.

The CNE has not released detailed results from this election, similar to past presidential elections in July 2024 when Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner, a claim rejected by the PUD, which maintains that their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, actually triumphed.

They had encouraged voters to abstain from participating in what they described as a flawed electoral process.

Opposition parties reported a significant boycott of the elections, estimating that abstention rates exceeded 85%.

They also highlighted heightened political tensions following the arrest of former anti-Chávez deputy Juan Pablo Guanipa, along with dozens of others accused of attempting to sabotage the electoral process.

Human rights organizations noted approximately 70 opposition arrests occurred across the country within 48 hours leading up to the elections.

Amid these events, Edmundo González has commented that true leadership is built through listening to the public's needs and sentiments.

Concurrently, María Corina Machado lauded the low turnout as a sign of popular resistance and asserted that the people possess the power to effect change.

Despite these claims of victory and mass support, opposition parties continue to demand the release of political prisoners, whom they claim are suffering in dire conditions within the Venezuelan prison system, as well as a transparent publication of the voter records from the recent presidential elections.
