Madrid Initiates Ambitious Urban Renewal of Reina Victoria Boulevard

A comprehensive redevelopment plan to enhance pedestrian experience and honor poet Vicente Aleixandre.
The City of Madrid has approved a significant urban renewal project for the Reina Victoria Avenue, which stretches between the districts of Chamberí and Moncloa-Aravaca.

This initiative aims to transform one of the busiest arteries in northern Madrid into a more pedestrian-friendly space, featuring aesthetic, functional, and cultural improvements.

Scheduled to commence this summer and extending until the summer of 2026, the project involves a total investment of €947,000 covering an area of 5,149 square meters.

The plan intends to renovate existing pavements while preserving the boulevard's original character and ensuring the coexistence of vehicular traffic and pedestrians.

The redevelopment will include the installation of new seating areas, children's play spaces, and biosustainable elements.

The pavement will be upgraded with selected materials including continuous concrete, granite gravel, and rubber, tailored to the designated use of each section.

In total, over 7,200 shrubs will be planted alongside six new trees, enhancing the area's greenery, complemented by new urban furniture and thirteen energy-efficient LED streetlights.

A key feature of the redesign will maintain the historic linear layout of the boulevard, incorporating a zigzag trail and reinstating the lateral garden beds that separate pedestrian pathways from traffic.

Of particular note will be a tribute to the poet Vicente Aleixandre, with six verses from his work "La Destrucción o el Amor" embedded within the transverse walks along the promenade.

The project will also introduce a new signalized pedestrian crossing at the intersection with General Ibáñez de Ibero Street, a much-supported request from local residents as highlighted in recent Participatory Budgets.

This reform aligns with the city council's commitment to enhance the livability of public spaces, particularly in areas with high pedestrian density.

Officials from the city's Works Department emphasize that such initiatives are aimed at ‘recovering the value of urban walks’ and strengthening the connection between residents and their environment, without compromising functionality or the identity of the neighborhood.
