Spanish Digital ID Application Surges to 400,000 Downloads in First 24 Hours

Spanish Digital ID Application Surges to 400,000 Downloads in First 24 Hours

The new MiDNI app allows users to carry a digital version of their DNI, facilitating various identification processes.
The newly launched application facilitating the use of Spain's digital National Identity Document (DNI) has achieved over 400,000 downloads within the first 24 hours of its release, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior.

Officially approved by the Council of Ministers, the MiDNI app was made available to the public starting Wednesday at 8 AM, providing users with the capability to carry their digital ID on mobile devices alongside the traditional physical document.

This digital ID is voluntary and is designed for identification purposes during in-person transactions with public and private entities.

Users can utilize it for processes such as opening bank accounts, renting vehicles, or checking into hotels.

However, it is important to note that this digital ID will not be valid for international border crossings or usage abroad.

The full rollout of the digital DNI is not expected to be completed until 2026, and until then, it cannot be used for online processes at government or private sector entities.

The MiDNI application is freely downloadable and is the sole official app sanctioned by the government to authenticate identity equivalently to the physical DNI.

It generates a QR code, verified and signed by the National Police, which guarantees the authenticity of the displayed information in real-time, ensuring that the details are current and valid at the point of verification.

To differentiate it from unofficial applications that bear similar names, the Ministry of the Interior has clarified the distinct design elements of the official MiDNI logo.

It features a navy blue background with light blue and white lettering stating 'MIDNI' in uppercase, where 'MI' is light blue and 'DNI' is white.

It also includes fragments of both the Spanish and European flags.

The application can be downloaded in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician, and English.

The Ministry emphasized that MiDNI safeguards against data manipulation or forgery, clarifying that personal data is not stored on the mobile devices used for identification nor on those verifying the identity of the digital DNI holder.

To obtain the digital DNI, individuals must complete a three-step process.

First, users must register to link their identity to a single mobile phone number, requiring that the physical DNI is valid and has active electronic certificates.

Registration can occur via the official website or at designated Document Update Posts (PAD) located at police stations and municipal offices.

It can also be performed while renewing the physical DNI at a police station.

Once registered, users can download the application and complete their profile, allowing them to begin using the digital ID. Internet connectivity is necessary, as the app generates a QR code each time identification is required.

The Ministry reiterated that personal identity data is not stored on the phone but queried in real-time from the National Police.

Users can choose which details to disclose based on the context of their identification needs, including options to display their photograph, name, surname, age, gender, and validity date of the DNI.

Upon selecting the desired level of information for each instance, the app generates a QR code displayed on the user's device screen.

This code, created by the National Police at the moment, confirms the authenticity of the information and remains valid for just 60 seconds, after which a new code must be generated for further verification.

The QR code can be scanned by devices with the MiDNI app installed, and the information displayed will only remain visible temporarily, ensuring that it is not stored on the verifier's device.
