Two firefighters have died following a fire in a garage located in Alcorcón, a municipality near Madrid.

The incident, which occurred on April 2, 2025, has also resulted in 15 injuries, one of which is in critical condition.

Emergency services reported that the fire erupted around 16:30 local time and is believed to have been initiated by an explosion related to a vehicle.

The circumstances suggest that a neighbor may have collided with his car while entering the garage, leading to the ignition of flames that spread to other vehicles.

Javier Prats, head of the SUMMA 112 emergency services, confirmed that one firefighter was found in a state of cardiac arrest and, despite immediate resuscitation efforts, could not be revived.

Another firefighter has been transported to Getafe Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for severe burns and remains intubated in critical condition.

In total, 14 firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation, with all in stable condition and not requiring hospital admission.

Witnesses recounted hearing a loud crash, followed by an explosion, prompting residents to flee their homes.

In response, local police reported that rather than evacuating the building, residents were instructed to remain in their apartments as a precautionary measure while the firefighting operation unfolded.

By 19:00, firefighters had fully extinguished the blaze and conducted ventilation in both the garage and the six-story building, which had been enveloped in thick black smoke.

In support of the emergency operation, SUMMA 112 established an advanced command post and medical unit near the incident site to assist those affected, including deploying psychologists to provide support to the firefighters and residents.

Nine fire units from the Community of Madrid were deployed to assist local firefighters, providing coverage for potential emergencies throughout the night.

In the wake of the tragedy, political leaders have expressed their condolences.

Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, extended her sympathies to the families of the deceased firefighters.

José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the Mayor of Madrid, acknowledged the bravery of the two firefighters who lost their lives during the incident.

Francisco Martín, the Government Delegate in the Community of Madrid, visited the scene to express his sympathy and support for those injured, emphasizing the vital role of firefighters in the region.

Additionally, Óscar López, the Minister and Secretary General of the PSOE in Madrid, conveyed his sorrow and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

Unai Sordo, the Secretary General of Comisiones Obreras, also expressed solidarity with the affected families.
