Tragic Shooting in Plasencia Claims Life of Two-Year-Old Girl

Tragic Shooting in Plasencia Claims Life of Two-Year-Old Girl

Violence erupts between rival families in San Lázaro, leading to multiple casualties and arrests.
A two-year-old girl has died following a shooting incident that occurred between rival families in the San Lázaro neighborhood of Plasencia, a town in the province of Cáceres, Spain.

The National Police reported the arrest of nine individuals in connection with the altercation that took place late Saturday night.

The girl was critically injured by a gunshot wound near the head and was subsequently admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Materno Infantil Hospital in Badajoz, where she later died.

In addition, a 25-year-old woman who was also shot in the foot is currently in stable condition at the Virgen del Puerto Hospital in Plasencia.

The violent events reportedly began around midnight and prompted a significant security response that remained active until approximately 5:00 AM on Sunday.

The National Police emphasized that investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances of the event and to identify those responsible, indicating that the incident likely stemmed from a confrontation between rival families within the neighborhood, which is recognized as one of the main drug trafficking markets in Extremadura and the western part of the Iberian Peninsula.

One of the clans involved is known as the Hilarios, who are reportedly based in the nearby Gabriel and Galán neighborhood.

Sources related to the investigation suggested that members of this clan had traveled to the San Lázaro area, where the shooting erupted.

A similar incident had occurred in this neighborhood in 2017, resulting in injuries to two men aged 52 and 19 years.

José Luis Quintana, the Government Delegate in Extremadura, expressed condolences over the child's death but noted that the arrested individuals had not yet appeared before a judge, with this expected to occur by Tuesday, pending further developments in the police investigation.

Quintana conveyed concerns about the severe consequences arising from this ongoing conflict between two families and confirmed that specialized teams from the National Police would be dispatched from other regions to assist in the investigation.

Reports indicate that members of one clan approached in two vehicles and began firing upon a family with whom they have a suspected dispute tied to drug trafficking activities.

Members of the opposing clan reportedly returned fire, resulting in injuries to both the young girl and the young woman.

In the operation, coordination was seen between the National Police, local police forces, and the Guardia Civil, with investigations remaining open as authorities continue their efforts to resolve the incident.
