Fatal mining accident in Cerredo claims five lives

Rescue efforts underway as investigation into the cause of the explosion begins in Asturias.
In a tragic incident in the Cerredo mine located in Degaña, Asturias, five miners from León lost their lives following a workplace accident.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by gas buildup within a gallery, has prompted an immediate investigation by the Judicial Police and the Mining Rescue Brigade.

Initial reports from the Guardia Civil indicate that the explosion was linked to a potential accumulation of methane gas.

The Cerredo mine, which opened in 2009, has been recognized as one of the most modern mining facilities in Spain.

The mine primarily focused on the extraction of anthracite, a highly pure type of coal.

However, operations ceased in 2018 and remained inactive until last summer, when the company Blue Solving received a permit for supplementary research.

Currently, Blue Solving is conducting a project in Cerredo aimed at extracting anthracite, with plans to produce graphite.

The company also intends to establish a briquette plant and a washing facility for strategic minerals.

Experts have emphasized that graphite is now regarded as a strategic commodity, especially in light of the growing global demand driven by the ongoing crisis.

Graphite, traditionally used in pencils, has seen increased utilization in electric vehicles and other technologies as a conductive lubricant and generator component.

Geologists have noted that no mines for graphite exploitation currently exist in Spain; all operations are in the research phase.

The prevailing theory regarding the cause of the explosion points to the presence of grisú, which refers to gas bubbles formed in the coal seams at higher elevations within the mine.

A hazardous concentration of methane, when mixed with air, can result in explosive conditions if ignited by even a minor spark.

This phenomenon has been a known hazard, having contributed to fatal incidents in the past.

Emilio Trigueros, a mining engineering expert, emphasized that ongoing monitoring of methane levels and potential grisú formation is critical within coal mines.

He remarked that the presence of grisú has historically been a concern due to its explosive potential.

In light of the latest incident, experts reiterated that mining activities are closely regulated, and safety measures are in place to monitor risks associated with gas accumulation.

In addition to the fatalities, four workers sustained injuries in the explosion, with two of the most critically injured individuals transported to hospitals for urgent care.

One 39-year-old man suffered severe burns and was evacuated to El Bierzo Hospital, while another injured worker, aged 47, was airlifted to the University Assistance Complex of León for treatment.

Two other persons were also evaluated for serious injuries, including a 36-year-old man with head trauma.

Asturias is now observing a period of mourning as the community grapples with the consequences of this tragic accident.
