Successful Conclusion of NATO's First Mission Involving Spain's S-81 Isaac Peral Submarine

The S-81, Spain's first fully indigenous submarine, participated in a major NATO naval exercise with 4,000 troops and 30 ships from nine countries.
The NATO naval exercise 'Dynamic Mariner/Flotex-25,' recently concluded on April 4, involved intensive operations in the Gulf of Cadiz and the southern coast of Andalusia, marking a significant military collaboration between NATO and the Spanish Navy.

The exercise, which commenced on March 24, mobilized approximately 4,000 military personnel and included 30 ships, two submarines, amphibious units, and aerial assets from nine NATO member states: Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Turkey, and the United States.

A principal objective of the exercise was to test the integration of new technologies in naval operations, alongside preparations to enhance Spain's contributions to maritime defense and the safeguarding of its legitimate interests, security, and territorial integrity.

Another key aim of 'Dynamic Mariner/Flotex-25' was to achieve certification for the Spanish Maritime Forces Headquarters (SPMARFOR).

This certification is a precursor to SPMARFOR assuming the role of Maritime Component Command (MCC) of NATO's Allied Reaction Force (ARF) from July 2025 until July 2026, allowing Spain to lead a high-readiness naval force.

The S-81 Isaac Peral submarine, which participated in this exercise, holds the distinction of being the first submarine designed and constructed entirely in Spain.

It underscores the country's technological advancements in defense capabilities.

The S-81 is the inaugural vessel in the S-80 Plus class of the Spanish Navy and measures 80.81 meters in length with a beam of 11.68 meters, displacing 2,965 tons when submerged.

This state-of-the-art submarine can achieve underwater speeds of up to 20.5 knots and features a propulsion system that combines three diesel generators of 1,100 kW each with a main electric motor of 3,500 kW.

Additionally, it incorporates an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system of 300 kW, which, once installed in future upgrades, will allow for extended submerged operations without surfacing.

The mission profile of the S-81 includes protecting naval forces, intelligence gathering, neutralizing both surface and underwater threats, and conducting special operations.
